Types of bird cages
Bird cages can be used for housing your pet birds or for purely home interior decoration purposes.
Types
Bird cages are available in different sizes for housing your birds in comfort and style. Small cages are a cheap solution for housing small birds like canaries, parakeets, finches or love birds. Small cages of high quality have bar spacing of 1/2 inch or less for bird safety. Medium sized cages are meant for medium size birds like cockatiels, weavers and Senegal. They are characterized by bar spacing of 1/2 inch to 5/8 inch.
Large birds like Amazons, parrots and cockatoos require more room to fly. So they have to be housed in large cages featuring bar spacing of one inch or more. Bird cage styles include Arabian, Tuscan, Modern, Oriental, simplistic, Victorian and antique style
Materials
Stainless steel cages are easy to clean and look very chic. These cages are strong and can keep the bird safe. These cages do not corrode either. Painted cages get damaged when scrubbed, whereas the metallic stainless steel bird cage has no such issue. These cages are a bit expensive though.
Acrylic cages are readily available and cheap. However their durability is lesser than metallic cages and your bird may find it difficult to climb on the cage, and not get enough exercise. Bamboo cages are also available. Wooden cages are made of cherry, pine, oak, maple or laminate. The disadvantage of wooden cages is that they are difficult to sanitize as germs embed themselves in the wood grains. These cages are not suited for parrots that like to chew wood. These cages are not preferable as they cause health hazards to the bird.
Decorative bird cages
Some bird cages are used solely as decorative items in the home in the form of wall hangings, showpiece, table centerpieces, candle holders and plant holders. They are available in wood, bamboo and metal. They include many attractive shapes like pagodas, cylindrical shape, globe shape and rectangular and square cages with semi circular domes. Some have gold trimmings, marble tops and intricate scroll work. Antique cages are used only for decorative purposes and not for housing birds as they are delicate and priceless. They compliment Victorian interior decor well. Designer bird cages with fancy accessories are very popular nowadays.
You can buy functional cages for housing your pet birds from pet shops, local retail stores and online. Fancy decorative bird cages can be found in all retail shops.
